Voting by Absentee Ballot

 

Eligibility

​

For this election, eligible voters can vote by absentee ballot if they meet the criteria of the three newly expanded reasons for voting absentee, as provided in the legislation passed by the General Assembly (and authored and sponsored by Matt) this year:

​

1) any person's sickness, including if you are care for a person (or people) who have sickness, or the general presence of Covid-19;

2) any person's physical disability, including if you care for a person (or people) who have a physical disability;

3) your absence from town for a period of time on Election Day.

​

The legislation eases the restrictions previously written into state law. It removes a requirement that commuters be out of town for all hours in which polls are open. It deletes language requiring a voter to be personally ill in order to qualify for a ballot based on sickness. Additionally, you may obtain an absentee ballot if you are an active member of the U.S. armed forces, religious beliefs that prevent you from performing secular activities like voting on election day, or you are performing duties as a primary, referendum, or election official at a polling place other than your own during all the hours on that day.

So long as you reasonably anticipate that one of these reasons would prevent you from voting in person, you may vote absentee.

How To Vote Absentee

Or, you can click HERE to download the absentee ballot application and submit by mail. You can also contact your Town Clerk’s office to request an application.

 

 

When filling out the application, make sure to note the following:

  1. Section I –   Fill out your contact information

  2. Section II –  Delivery address if it’s different than your registered address

  3. Section III – Date of the election: November 8

  4. Section IV – Reason you are needing an absentee ballot

  5. Section VI – Sign and date the application

 

Once complete return it via one of the three options below:

  1. Place it in a drop box at the Government Center parking garage (888 Washington Boulevard) or the Harry Bennett Library next to the outdoor book drop (115 Vine Road). Boxes will open on September 30.

  2. Beginning October 7, bring your application to the Town Clerk’s office Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm and fill out a ballot and vote. (Town Clerk’s office will also be open on Saturday, November 5 from 9:00 am to 12 noon).

  3. Starting now, mail your completed and signed application to:

Please note: electronic copies of absentee-ballot applications are not accepted as per Connecticut Law.

 

Absentee ballots will be available starting October 7 and will be mailed out starting then if a completed application was returned.

As soon as it arrives, fill out your ballot and please vote for the endorsed Democrats on Row A. Place your ballot in the inner envelope, sign the inner envelope, place the inner envelope in the outer envelope, and return it via the drop box or mail it back to your Town Clerk’s office. Your absentee ballot MUST BE RECEIVED by your Town Clerk no later than 8:00 pm on Election Day, November 8.
